Recommended Books in ‘aqeedah – Imaam Bin Baaz

What are the books that your esteemed self would advise reading in ‘aqeedah?

The best, greatest and most truthful book that should be read in learning ‘aqeedah, ahkaam and character is the Book of Allaah, which no falsehood comes within or behind – a revelation from the Most Wise, the One full of Praise.

Allaah said {Verily, this Qur’an guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers, who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward} [Al-Isra’:9]

He also said, {Say: It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing} [Fussilat: 44]

He said about it [the Qur’aan], {(This is) a Book (the Qur’an) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember} [Saad: 29].

He said about it [the Qur’aan], {And this is a blessed Book (the Qur’an) which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy } [Al-An’am: 155].

He said about it [the Qur’aan], {And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves} [An-Nahl: 89].

The prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said about it in the authentic hadeeth in his sermon of the farewell Hajj, ‘Indeed, I have left among you that by which you will never go astray if you hold tight to it – the Book of Allah.’ And he said in his sermon on the day of Ghudayrkham when he came back to Medina from the farewell Hajj, ‘I have left among you two weighty ones: the first, the Book of Allaah, in which is guidance and light so take it and adhere to it.’ So he encouraged [the masses] with the Qur’aan and urged them with it and then said, ‘And my household – I remind you by Allaah about my household, I remind you by Allaah about my household.’ It was reported by Muslim in his Saheeh. The first from the hadeeth of Jaabir, may Allaah be pleased with him and the second from the hadeeth of Zayd bin Arqam, may Allaah be pleased with him.

He also said, ‘The best of you are those who learn the Qur’aan and teach it’ – reported by al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh.

He also said, ‘Whosoever follows a path to seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather together in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, without tranquility descending upon them, mercy enveloping them, the angels surrounding them, and Allah making mention of them amongst those who are with Him. And whosoever is slowed down by his actions will not be hastened forward by his lineage.’ Reported by Muslim in his Saheeh from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him.

And the ahadeeth with this meaning are many.

Then, the best books after theNoble Qur’aan are the books of the prophetic ahadeeth. And they are the books of the Sunnah, like the two Saheehs, the four Sunan and other than them from the reckoned books of ahadeeth. It is fitting to organise sittings and circles reciting the Qur’aan, teaching it and giving the masses understanding of it and also to study books of the noble hadeeth, giving them their due and giving the masses an understanding of them. And this is the responsibility of the people of knowledge and insight – those who are trusted in their knowledge and understanding.

And from the suitable books for this would be reading: Riyaad us Saliheen, at Targheeb wat tarheeb, al-Waabil as sayyib, Umdatul hadeeth ish-Shareef, Buloogh al-maraam, muntaqa al-Akhbaar and other than these from the beneficial books of hadeeth.
